My name is Aizawa Marco, I have been living with Type 1 Diabetes for 30 years. I was diagnosed when I was 12 years old. I work as a Community Nurse. My day as a community Nurse can be unpredictable. Lunch hours are not fixed. I will do insulin injections before meals and 1 dose of insulin before I sleep. As a nurse I can relate to almost all patients living with Diabetes. Hence I can be able to use my experience to share with them how I manage my sugars. One tagline I like to share is: “if we don’t share how we manage our diabetes, no one will know if it is gonna work.”
I like to run, cycle, and sometimes swim. I don’t undermine myself. I like to challenge myself when I exercise. If I know I am going to exercise, checking my blood sugar is important, based on my blood sugar I will determine how much I will reduce my bolus insulin and how much I eat. Exercise is helpful in Diabetes management. But of course when we exercise, hypos will be a common effect we need to watch out for.
How I try to prevent hypos when I exercise, is to reduce my insulin before exercise, adjust my food intake, and watch my sugars before and after exercise.
