Abby (8 Year Old) has swimming classes twice a week and dance class once a week. Physical activities are very important and crucial in helping Abby manage her overall HbA1c. More often than not, physical exercises and activites help to keep her BG within range (4-8) and most of the time lower her BG post physical activities. She can consume more calories without additional insulin. However there are also times when she goes into hypo in the midst of physical activities. We just have to manage her hypo situations according to the intensity and type of exercises.
Abby is on CGM and we are able to track her BG via the data sharing app. There are cases when her BG will spike during exercises and usually the spikes are short-lived and will come down eventually. Unless the spikes causes her BG to go beyond 14, we will not do any corrections. For hypo situations, we ensure we have sufficient fast-acting carbs on standby, usually sweets and juice / honey sticks which will help to mitigate the hypo situations.
In school, before her physical education lesson (1 hour), Abby will check her reading and usually eat 1-2 sweets / 1 honey stick (depending on her pre-class BG) so her BG will not drop too fast.
