Mother of a 9 year old with T1D

When my son was first diagnosed, people around me often said that T1D should keep away from sugary stuff and I had given my child too big a portion of bubble tea i.e. poor control of his diet that led to his diagnosis.

There are some challenges to eat out. As my child is only willing to bolus on his buttock, we can only use the handicap toilet at the mall for injection. It is not the cleanest place to do so. Sometimes, we use nursing room where possible.

Food wise, we can only guess the carb especially if we go to a new place or try out new food. There is no carb information available and sometimes, the sauce or seasoning can turned out to be potent. Understanding the GI of different food is important. It is also difficult to ask my child to eat food in a certain order to minimize the spike. Children just want to enjoy their food in whichever manner they like. The other challenge is to juggle with when to give insulin, the speed of ordering food & how fast or slow the food is being served. We sometimes refer to HPB energy and nutrient database for a rough gauge of the carb. Buzud AI carb counting is also helpful.
