Even though I am on an insulin pump, I always carry with me insulin pens (long acting and quick acting insulin for basal and bolus), needles and am prepared to switch to insulin pens in case of an emergency. For example, if there is a flight delay, accident or natural disaster, the insulin in the pump typically lasts between 1-3 days only so it may not be enough. Also, if the quick acting insulin in the pump runs out, long acting basal insulin would be critical in order to prevent diabetic ketoacidosis. Even though I usually pack enough supplies, I have come to realize that in the event of a disaster or accident, the supplies may be in a hotel far away, and it would be prudent to keep a sufficient stash in my backpack all the time. Besides insulin, it would be prudent to carry enough sweets (or any other form of sugar) on hand, factoring in extras in case of emergencies and delays.
