Father, 44 years old, caregiver of a child with T1D

My child was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of four. He now uses a Libre sensor and an insulin pump to help manage his condition. At times, he receives comments from others like, “Can you eat that?”, “Do you need to ask your parents first?”, or “Why are you eating ice cream?”

Although these comments may not be meant in a harmful way, he’s quite sensitive to them and often feels that others are making fun of him. As a result, he gets very upset and takes these remarks personally.

As parents, we’re trying to encourage him to be more open and not take every comment to heart—helping him understand that people may simply be curious or uninformed, rather than intentionally unkind.
