T1s have to be very astute in trying to identify “hidden carbs” when we are eating out, or having F&B that are new to us. They exist in sauces, marinades, syrups and artificial flavourings, and it is very difficult for newly diagnosed folks to get used to.
I know my taste buds have changed after so long with T1D now – I can spot sweeter and/or saltier food, which not only helps me estimate the no. of carbs, but ultimately I can make healthier choices about my food. We can still eat anything we wish to, as long as we match our insulin intake to what we eat.
My family gives me huge support during meal times. We always have healthier home-cooked food: 100% brown rice, minimal hidden carbs, minimal fried and breaded dishes. This actually made everyone healthier, and my parents definitely look younger than their age now 🙂
