Rethink your beverage choices:
Sugary drinks such as coffee and soft drinks that are sweetened (most artificially), can hinder your diabetic care efforts and have been shown to be linked to metabolic syndromes. These include the conditions – high blood pressure, high level of cholesterol, high level of triglycerides, increased weight gain and high blood sugar levels. Furthermore, these drinks can also contribute a significant portion of your daily caloric intake. Sugary drinks also provide little nutritional value to your diet.
Avoid drinks that include the following ingredients:
- High-fructose corn syrup
- Fructose
- Fruit juice concentrates
- Honey
- Sugar
- Syrup
- Corn syrup
- Sucrose
- Dextrose
Try and avoid drinking regular soda, energy drinks that contain sugar and fruit juices.
Drinks that are safe to drink include:
- Water
- Skim or low-fat milk
- Unsweetened drink
- Unsweetened coffee
- Tomato/V-8 juice
- Sugar-free sports drinks
- Any drinks with zero or low calories
- Unsweetened coffee and tea
- 100% fruit juices occasionally and in moderation
- Alcohol sparingly and on special occasions
Some tips:
- For a refreshing, low-calorie kick, squeeze some fresh lemon or lime juice into your drink
- Even low-sugar options, such as vegetable juice, should be consumed in moderation
- Dairy products
